Thoughts on "Partnership for 21st Century Skills"

After looking over the website for the "Partnership for 21st Century Skills", I was impressed by their vision and mission (see website http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/). I would agree that we have to foster these skills in our students in order for them to compete in tomorrow's society. I don't agree with everything that is in the "No Child Left Behind" Act, but if we don't cooperate at all levels, like the partnership suggests, then a lot of our children will be left behind. There are some big money corporations behind the movement, because they want to be able to recruit from the ranks of our students for years to come. There is a motive behind their membership and hopefully there is their money behind it as well.

  1. I too agreed with a lot of their ideas. I think that is it very important to look towards the future workforce as well as look at tradition curriculm when planning instruction. I am very excited to see these ideas backed by a company such as apple. I think that the more people are involved the more resources will be available in the future. Just look at the resources provided by apple in Chapter 8 of our text. As for "No Child Left Behind" who does agree with everything in the document?

  2. I agree completely that business invest their money into these program because some day these people may be working for them. I also has a lot to do with publicity. My opinion is whatever get one into education is a good thing. I just wish apple would give my school 50 new computers because I am so tired of dealing with old slow computers!!

  3. As an educational textbook Editor I think that there could be other motives in addition to recruitment for some of these companies.

For instance, the publishing companies (among other membership companies) may actually want to promote and create products that will benefit all; students, standards, and their bottom line. Being a part of this organization may give them insight into the future products they may have to one day create.

  4. I also agree that with schools and teachers not being able to keep up with technology (mainly due to money) there will be students left behind. I also agree that large corporations should have an interest in schools for the very reason that you stated: they want to recruit new employees in the future. To ensure that students get the best education (including the use of various technology) these corporations should "sponsor" schools in order to make sure that students can have this level of education.

  5. Amber,
I would like to see corporations "sponsor" the schools, but I would not want them to dictate curriculum. It would be wise to have some of their input but I certainly would not want to see it go to the extent of having the sponsors logo on everything.
